♦Aims and Scope

Center for Information Biology and DNA Data Bank of Japan (CIB-DDBJ) was established to meet the needs of researchers in Japan involved in the establishment of the newly developing research area of bioinformatics. It is generally accepted that research in biology today requires the use of information science and computers for experimental design and data analysis. This is particularly true with biological information such as DNA sequence data which is accumulating at a great rate. Analysis of such data using computers is becoming more essential and CIB-DDBJ will play an important role in initiating activities in information biology in Japan and abroad.

Research at CIB-DDBJ will focus on elucidating evolutionary mechanisms of various kinds of biological phenomena by regarding them as a flow of information. In particular, biological mechanisms should be understood as interactions between molecular information and other biological information. The fusion of molecular and structural biology with information science will be important in this type of research. To elucidate biological phenomena, a variety of approaches, including not only computer analysis but also experimental works should be conducted.

♦Staffs and Facilities

The Center for Information Biology and DNA Data Bank of Japan, (The Center for Information Biology was renamed in 2001 which began operations in April 1995) is a division of the National Institute of Genetics (NIG), Mishima, Japan. CIB-DDBJ consists of five research laboratories, Laboratory for DNA Data Analysis, Laboratory for Gene Function Research, Laboratory for Gene-Product Informatics, Laboratory for Research and Development of Biological Databases, and Laboratory for Gene-Expression Analysis. CIB-DDBJ also operates the DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ), a member of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database, DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank. Currently the research staff includes five professors, one associate professor, and five assistant professors. There are also many postdoctoral fellows and PhD students. In addition, there are more than 50 staffs who operate the DDBJ, and provide support for research activities. Center for Information Biology and DNA Data Bank of Japan is directed by Prof. Takashi Gojobori.
